Growing up I remember the nursery rhyme about little girls being made of sugar and spice and all things nice despite being a bit of a tom boy making mud pies, climbing trees and playing in the shell of an old classic car my dad was restoring. Now all grown up with two little boys I don’t see either of them being made of snakes and snails and puppy dog tails!

Sugar and spice biscuits are a simple vanilla biscuit rolled in a sugar and spice mixture prior to baking. While traditionally the sugar and spice mix is made of sugar and cinnamon there are a variety of other flavours you can try. We are loving the Lane’s BBQ Dessert Seasonings and used the four different flavours to make four different biscuits from the one batch of dough. The four flavours include: Homemade Apple Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Strawberry Shortcake and Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel.

ingredients

for the biscuits

  • 125g butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 80g raw sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup (160g) self raising flour (gluten free)

for the sugar mixture

  • 50g raw sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Lane’s Dessert Seasonings – my favourite for these biscuits is the Strawberry Shortcake, Craig’s is the Apple Pie

directions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 180c/355f.
  2. Beat butter and vanilla until combined.
  3. Add sugar to the mixture and beat until combined
  4. Add egg to the mixture and mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in sift flour and fold until combined.
  6. Roll dough into balls about 2.5cm/1in in diameter and toss in sugar mixture.
  7. Place on a lined tray and press down with a fork.
  8. Bake in 180c/355f oven for 10 minutes.
  9. Enjoy your sugar and spice biscuits!

Thermomix directions

  1. Beat butter and vanilla in TM bowl for 10 seconds, speed 5.
  2. Add sugar and beat for 10 seconds, speed 5.
  3. Add egg and mix for 5 seconds, speed 5.
  4. Add flour and mix for 5 seconds, speed 5.
  5. Roll dough into balls about 2cm in diameter and toss in sugar mixture.
  6. Place on a lined tray and press down with a fork.
  7. Bake in 180c/355f oven for 10 minutes.
  8. Enjoy your sugar and spice biscuits!
