mac n cheese loaf inspired by 3-Ingredient Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt
Mac n cheese is a great side dish and is especially popular alongside barbecued meats. I recently tried a mac n cheese loaf at a local barbecue restaurant and was really impressed with the crunchy and cheesy crust so I thought I’d give it a go at home. I used the simple, yet very tasty, 3-Ingredient Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt and used breadcrumbs and more cheese for the crust.
You can find the recipe at Serious Eats. The recipe is also available in J. Kenji Lopez-Alt’s top selling cookbook ‘The Food Lab’
directions
- Preheat your oven to 190c/375f.
- Make the mac n cheese following Kenji’s instructions up until the last step. Remove from the heat before the sauce reaches a creamy consistency as this will happen when you bake the loaf. For the cheese I used a combination of yellow and red cheddar.
- Using a silicone bread loaf pan, spread some butter around the insides and pour over some breadcrumbs over all the surfaces.
- Pour in the mac n cheese.
- Top with more breadcrumbs and cheese and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden. Then serve and enjoy your mac n cheese loaf!
